Veggie Grill

Ali got here yesterday! I picked him up at LAX and we came back home and went back to bed for several hours. I can't even say how happy I am to see him.

After we woke up we went to Veggie Grill for an early dinner because Ali wanted some vegan mac and cheese. Veggie Grill is an awesome vegan restaurant (they don't ever use the word vegan or vegetarian but they are totally vegan) with a few locations. Mac and cheese isn't on the menu but I called to make sure that they have it - I think they're testing it out or phasing it in.

I got the kale salad, and it was really good. Ali liked it, too. And it's beautiful!

Ali got the VBurger with mac and cheese. Both were fantastic and after only a few bites Ali declared Veggie Grill the best restaurant he had ever been to. The mac is made with Daiya and it's creamy and delish. The burger is by far the meatiest veggie burger I've ever eaten... to the point where it's creepy. Creepily delicious. I have sworn to take every meat eater I know to the Veggie Grill. Here's Ali with his food.

The best thing is that the Veggie Grill has very reasonable prices - we got all this food for about $20. We used to spend that much at Chili's or Applebee's and this is way better! So if you are in LA, go to Veggie Grill!

Some Simple Food

Quick update with some recent food pictures.

A breakfast this week: black beans and rice, red pepper, and fresh peas.

Dinner the other day was zucchini noodles and sweet potatoes. I made a sauce for the noodles out of umeboshi plum paste, nutritional yeast, agave, garlic, and miso. It was my first time using umeboshi paste and it turned out well! It's very flavorful, salty, and sour and needs to be balanced out with the sweet, which is why I used some agave.

Today I ate sweet potatoes and soup. The soup has a head of kale, a head of chard, a carrot, a zucchini, some corn, two tomatoes, garlic, and broth. And no, I did not eat all of this today. It's a lot of soup.

I still have plans to write about the issues I previewed in my last blog, but they'll have to wait. My boyfriend Ali is coming to visit tomorrow and is staying for nine days so I will be a bit preoccupied. =)

Sprouts, Sprouts, Everywhere

I went to the Studio City Unitarian Universalist church yesterday as planned and the Earth Day service went really well. I was trying to think of something I could do for the Earth Day Lent -- but I'll get there in a minute. I always walk to church and afterwards I walked to Whole Foods to pick up some more sweet potatoes.

When I got home I did some cooking -- I made veggie soup, black beans with wild rice, raw bread, raw green smoothie crackers, dehydrated sprouted lentils, buckwheat groats, and spelt groats, and some slightly dehydrated kiwi slices.

The soup had leftover veggies I needed to use - a bunch of collard greens, carrots, fennel, half a tomato, some sun-dried tomato, a little bit of corn, some yellow pepper, a couple mushrooms, veggie broth (I use the concentrated kind out of a jar that I mix with water - there is no need for all that waste buying packages of veggie broth!), garlic, and seasonings. It was really good! I made a small pot and ate that for lunch.

The black beans and rice were made of a can of black beans, 2 cups cooked wild rice, a tiny bit of corn, garlic, seasonings, and a little water cooked in a pan until the rice and beans absorbed the flavorings. I really just made this to have some on hand for snacks, to eat with salad, etc. Easy, healthy emergency food.

I had sprouted some buckwheat groats, spelt berries, lentils, and quinoa. I still haven't done anything with the quinoa but I split the buckwheat and spelt in half. The first half I used to make raw bread. I took my food processor and put the sprouts in there and added some zucchini and banana and processed into a thick pasty dough. I have no idea what the measurements are but you'll have a pretty good idea if it seems doughy or not. I don't know why everyone is so afraid of making raw bread -- it's so easy! It doesn't have to rise so you don't have to get it exactly right. I also added some cinnamon and a few goji berries. And that's it! I put it on some parchment paper and dehydrated it for 4-5 hours, flipped it over, and then on really low heat overnight.

The crackers are pretty much a dehydrated green smoothie and just a way to use extra produce and make it portable. It has strawberry tops, lots of kale stems, spirulina, kiwi ends, and several clementines that were starting to look unappetizing. That's it! I processed them until smooth and dehydrated them for the same amount of time as the bread. You could do less and they would turn out more like fruit leather or for a longer time and they'll be more crackery. Up to you.

The rest of the buckwheat and spelt sprouts I just mixed with a little bit of blackstrap molasses (just a little) and dehydrated for 4-5 hours until slightly crunchy. I can now use these as cereal - just the way they are -- blend them up to make a finer cereal or even flour, or make them into raw bread later.

I took the sprouted lentils and mixed them with a little Braggs, cumin, and chili powder and dehydrated the same amount of time as the other sprouts. Now they can be used as salad topper or later made into a lentil pate or whatever.

Those sprouts are being kept in an old salsa container. Here's an environmentally friendly tip for you -- save your jars! Wash them out, peel the stickers off, and re-use. I never have to buy any mason jars, etc., because I buy food that comes in them. I even save little things like garlic jars and end up putting sauces in them. I saved my lemon juice jar and use it to put salad dressings in. Save and reuse!!

I went to my audition and then came home and made some more roasted sweet potatoes. I didn't take a picture of my dinner because it was exactly like Saturday - salad and sweet potatoes. But it was better than Saturday's dinner because of my dinner companion -- my mom via Skype!

This morning I got up and immediately put on my workout clothes and went out for a walk. While I was walking I saw these amazing trees with crazy red flowers (I guess they're flowers?).

Aren't those cool? And while I was walking I thought of something I can do for my Earth Day Lent -- pick up trash while I'm on my walk. So I started today and I even added a little vigor to my walk by picking things up and running back to the last trash can I had seen. It does make me sad to see that people still litter (WTF, guys?!) but I'm glad to have thought of another way to help.

And then I'll do another post in the future about all the things I'm doing to help the environment and steps that you can take, both big and small.

Yesterday I met my stepmom's cousin and her husband and their little baby for lunch -- they live five minutes away from me! What a coincidence! We went to Aroma Cafe here in Studio City, it's a cute place with lots of outdoor seating and several vegan options. I got a great Asian noodle salad with tofu, plenty of veggies, and papaya shreds. I can't believe I forgot to take a picture! Oops. I had that for brunch and later in the afternoon, too, because it was a really big salad.

I went to the library and checked out the book "The McDougall Program: Twelve Days to Dynamic Health." I wasn't expecting a lot of new information but I have to say, it's pretty interesting. He advocates a starch-based diet with plenty of green and yellow veggies and a couple servings of fruit a day. Absolutely no oils or even fatty plant foods like nuts, seeds, and avocados - at least if you are trying to lose weight. There's also a diet called "Mary's Mini," which his wife devised, that involves basing all three meals off of one starch, such as potatoes, for a week or two. I really seriously love sweet potatoes and I can totally see myself eating them for every meal so I'm thinking about trying it. I started with dinner!

For breakfast I had Apfelschorle -- this is a popular drink in Germany that's made of sparkling water and apple juice. It's usually about a 50/50 combination but I like to do about 4 parts water to 1 part juice. OMG it is so good!

I drank that whole bottle of water. Proud of myself!

For lunch I met a Meetup group at M Cafe in Culver City. It was supposed to be a pizza party but I got the M Cafe Macro Bowl. It had brown rice, seasoned black beans, and steamed vegetables. It was good but it was lacking a couple of things that the menu advertised - homemade pickles and carrot-ginger dressing if I remember correctly. The beans were really tasty, though, so I just mixed them around and seasoned my rice with them. I saved some of the beans and rice so I'll get to enjoy it again tomorrow!

For dinner I had a salad with mango salsa and balsamic vinegar and some sweet potatoes and yams that I roasted with no oil (not even spray) and seasoned with Chinese Five Spice powder and Garam Masala. Very good!

For dessert I had St. John's Wort tea. Yummm.

Tomorrow I'm going to the Unitarian Universalist church for the Earth Day program. They're doing a sort of Lent for Earth Day where you do something good for the earth for 40 days and I am the leader for the group of people giving up meat, so they can ask me questions, etc. Then tomorrow night I was supposed to go to an Italian meetup that I was really looking forward to but I just got an audition at the same time. I can't really go to the Meetup still because of the timing and they're pretty far away from each other. Bummer, but work comes first and I will never be bummed about getting an audition!!

Tofu Scramble

Yesterday I had an audition in the morning, then got my oil changed. Yay! I have been meaning to do that for a while and it really felt good to get it done. While I was waiting I walked to Trader Joe's and picked up a few items -- mango salsa, which makes my salads that much more enjoyable, a tomato that did not end up being extremely tasty, and some seitan strips which were low-cal, very low fat, and low price. I'm not the biggest fan of TJ's in the world because I dislike how focused it is on packaged items, but when there are certain packaged items you need, it can be really good deal. For example, I picked up a jar of crushed garlic for about $1. Not bad.

After the oil change I met my friend for a hike in Runyon Canyon. I can see why it's so popular -- it's amazingly beautiful!!!

I had a big old salad in my new salad bowl, topped with mango salsa.

Today I didn't go to my Cardio Barre class because I was too sore and realized that not only do I need to break down my muscles, but I also need to let them heal. So I did some gentle yoga instead. I made a great tofu scramble with a pack of frozen and thawed firm tofu, some of the TJ's seitan strips, a tomato, some yellow pepper, a fresh artichoke, sundried tomato, kim chi, Braggs, oregano, cumin, turmeric, and a lot of spinach.

I ate about half for lunch and half for dinner. Here's my lunch, on my beautiful IU plate.

I had another audition tonight and then came home and watched FlashForward. It's a little silly but I like it.

I ran out of almond milk so I tried making my own for the first time. It was easy - I just blended about 10 almonds with a cup of water. I like to make everything lighter than recipes call for and I always cut the amount of nuts at least in half. I don't mind watery food. I strained through a nut milk bag and put my almond milk in a jar and my almond pulp in another jar and popped both in the fridge. When I buy more bananas I'll mix the almond pulp with a banana in the food processor and make "almond butter."

Oh My, Dehydrated Fruit

I busted the dehydrator back out last night (OK, it's always on the counter) and I made some great stuff. And then I ate all of it today. I dehydrated some apple chips, strawberries, and a kiwi, and a tray of fruit leather. The fruit leather was made of several clementines that needed to be eaten, a couple figs, a kiwi, some strawberries (tops and all), and then some spirulina, which made it green. I also made a bunch of kale into kale chips. My first kale chip venture was not fantastic, but also not horrible. I definitely need more practice.

So what else did I do today? Lots of exercise. Lots. First I did my usual 1/2 hour walk to and from my 1 hour Cardio Barre class -- so that's two hours right there. Then I came home for about an hour and a half and had some lunch. I ate this:

Then I went on a two-hour long walk. So all together, that's four hours of exercise. I have a nagging hip injury and it really started hurting during the walk and it's driving me crazy. It's killing me and I can't figure out how to make this darn injury GO AWAY! It's been bugging me on and off for a year. :(

After my walk I went to Whole Foods to grab some apples. I really, really love apples and have realized that I need to eat one a day. Every time I eat one I think, "Hey! Why don't I eat more of these?" I think I have this strange idea that apples are to-go food and so I only ever eat them out of the house. I need to get it in my head that it's totally acceptable to eat apples any ole time.
Anyhow, I saw Tia Carrere (of Wayne's World fame) at Whole Foods and she was looking very lovely. Then when I was going out to my car she walked out, as well, and was loading groceries into her car when BAM out popped this dirty, quasi-homeless-looking man holding a big ole camera and started taking pictures of her loading up her groceries. It was very funny. So, I had my first paparazzi sighting today. I also lucked out while I was out WF because they were giving out samples of fruit salad. Yay!

After that thrilling encounter I went to tutoring and then to Target, where I bought another coffee grinder for my flaxseeds as well as a big bowl for my salads. My last coffee grinder suddenly bit the dust, which made me realize that I probably need to just stop being so cheap and buy a slightly better model.

Then I came home and watched LOST and V yayayay. By the way, Morris Chestnut is awesome. If I was going to describe the best-looking man I could think of, it would be him. On top of that, he is a super fine actor. For dinner I ate a broccoli mash that I made last night -- it has a head of broccoli (stems and all), garlic, nutritional yeast, a little bit of brazil nuts and hemp seeds, and a bunch of fresh basil. I ate about half of it and it was really good.

Dessert was a banana mashed with raw cacao powder and a cup of St. John's Wort tea.

Now I need to go to bed because I have an audition in the morning and then a hike in Runyon Canyon with a friend. Let's hope this old achy body makes it!

Meetup at Vegan Village

I ate a lot of salad this weekend. A LOT. And then last night I got this CRAZY craving for seitan. I had been feeling it for a while but I didn't eat it because it isn't raw. But then, my love for seitan could not wait anymore and I did something I've never done before -- I actually drove to the grocery store just to pick up one item because I absolutely had to have it, right then. And it was really, really good. Yumyumyum.

I also had some miso/kim chi soup this weekend, which just meant I heated up some water for a minute in the microwave, then stirred in some miso and kim chi. Very sophisticated.

Today I went to Vegan Village Internet Cafe for lunch with a Meetup group full of people I had never met before. I had a great time and stayed so long that by the time I got home it was dinnertime. I just talked to people for a long time about a wide variety of stimulating topics. I love good conversation! I had this kale salad:

It was really tasty but I wished it was about twice that big. Most of the menu there is soul food and everyone seemed to really enjoy what they ordered. I did have a bite of the mac 'n cheese and the gumbo and both were fantastic.

I've also been doubling down on trying to find a literary agent, but I'm not having much luck. I wrote a book about traveling in Europe -- it's half travel narrative/half how-to guide. I have queried lots of agents who seemed to have similar interests and gotten some responses, but they all culminated in a "Good work, keep it up, it's just not right for me at this time" message. Too bad =( and very frustrating.

Tomorrow I have a callback for a short film in Marina del Rey. I haven't been down there yet, maybe they'll have a good beach for walking on!

Ketchup and Mustard!

I started off the morning with yoga and a walk/skip. =)
Breakfast was a green smoothie with kale, cucumber, strawberries, a kiwi, spirulina, rhubarb, and blueberries.

Snacks throughout the day were several oranges and 1/2 a cherimoya.

For lunch I had three nori rolls with asparagus. The first one had asparagus, cultured veggies, and then... mustard. I got the idea from Averie (of Love Veggies and Yoga) who loves to put mustard on green vegetables. And it was surprisingly delicious!

My second roll cut out the cultured veggies and added ketchup! By the way, I have eaten half the jar of cultured veggies in the past TWO DAYS. That is a little whoaa but also it's definitely not the worst thing to have eaten half a jar of.

I also had a small salad comprised of greens, arugula, and herbs from my garden!!!! I also added some salsa after the picture was taken but I didn't grow that so I didn't feel the need to record it.

For dinner I had more salad! OMG, I have eaten so much lettuce in the past two days. I've eaten about 2/3 of the greens I bought on Wednesday, and I bought a LOT. And what did I dress my lettuce with? Mustard. I had about four bowls of salad and for one of them I mixed my mustard with a little agave for "honey mustard." It was all good. Yum!

For dessert I had a banana with coconut, cacao nibs, and cinnamon.

I think I'm going to have some St. John's Wort tea now and watch TV. I'm celebrating my 5 year anniversary with my boyfriend! OK, I'm not really celebrating, especially seeing as I am alone, but I still think it's cool.

Salad and Yoga

I had a huuuge salad for dinner last night. It had lots of mixed greens (spinach, arugula, kale, chard, Italian mix, winter mix, and spring mix), cherry tomatoes, cultured veggies, pumpkin seeds, Rawmesan, goji berries, and my new raw sweet onion dressing.

For dessert I had a banana mashed up with cinnamon and some shredded coconut and cacao nibs. It's a really satisfying dessert that is good to eat when you're still a little hungry and need something to help satisfy that urge to eat more.

This morning I woke up and did some yoga and went on a walk/skip outside -- skipping forwards, backwards, and sideways is just fun and silly but it's also a good workout.

I was thinking about the difference between yoga and all other types of exercise. When you do different yoga poses, the teacher makes comments like "This move is good for the liver" and "This is for your immune system." Now, I don't know if that really works, but I like the attitude of being focused inwards and on your general health. All other exercise is focused just on appearance -- this move is for your butt, this move will get rid of your arm jiggle. My mom always said that I should identify with my insides and make healthy choices based on taking care of my insides, regardless of what I look like outside. I think that's a healthy mindset and can keep you from getting too obsessed with every flaw of your body. I think yoga might be a good exercise practice for people with body image problems because of the emphasis on what you're doing for your organs, your various bodily systems, and your energy and mindset, not just on what muscle groups you're working.

Santa Monica Farmers' Market and Co-Op, Kundalini Yoga

Yesterday I went to the Santa Monica Farmers' Market, as is quickly becoming a weekly ritual. I bought 2 avocados, 3 cherimoyas, a bag of kiwis, lots of mixed greens, and fresh peas. Then I went for an hour-long walk along the beach. So nice!

After the beach I went to the Santa Monica Co-Op, which I hadn't been to before. I was pretty devoted to our co-op in Bloomington (Bloomingfoods) and this one was like Bloomingfoods but bigger and with a lot more vegan stuff. I was so excited and went a little purchase-crazy. They have a fantastic bulk section as well as a bulk spices section, which I hadn't seen anywhere in LA yet. I don't want to buy a new bottle every time I run out of spices (and I run out of cinnamon a lot because I loooove it). I bought some St. John's Wort tea, some Zukay raw dressing, some garlic sauerkraut, some cultured veggies (it's like sauerkraut of broccoli, carrots, etc.), and yacon powder. I ran out of my beloved maca and decided to try yacon instead. I ended up putting it in some almond milk later that day and it is really tasty! It actually tastes a bit like cotton candy, which is crazy. I bought a few Larabars because they were only 99 cents each, which is quite a bit cheaper than Whole Foods. I don't eat Larabars very often but I like to have them for when I'm going somewhere. I also bought some raw vegan vitamins. I don't really take vitamins and I like getting my vitamins from food but every now and then I feel inspired and I want to make sure I'm getting my B12, etc. Plus, they were $10 off. I also needed some lotion, but I'd heard of people using coconut oil/butter as lotion and it was cheaper than the lotion so I decided to try it out. After putting it on today I have to say that it was a success. My skin feels very soft and I smell awesome!

Last night for dinner I had salad and zucchini pasta covered with my new cultured veggies.

I couldn't open my sauerkraut. I even have one of those rubber jar-opener thingies that always works but I seriously can't open it. I also realized once I got home that the "best-by" date was about a month ago. Crap! I don't know what happens to old sauerkraut and if that's part of the reason I can't open the jar. Maybe I'll just keep it around and go back next week and return it. I don't know...

Last night after dinner I watched Lost and V on my computer. ABC wasn't coming in on Tuesday for some reason (darn rabbit ears) so I had to wait. Both episodes were so good! I'm obsessed!

Today I woke up and worked out immediately. I did an hour-long Kundalini yoga video. It was interesting and definitely different from other yoga that I have done. It was fun, though, and I really like mixing up my workouts. I know that I enjoy exercise, but I get bored of any one type of exercise almost immediately. It's bad.

To eat today so far I've had several oranges, 1/3 of a cherimoya, some coffee (I went out and met someone for coffee), and one nori roll with asparagus and cultured veggies. I think tonight I'll have salad. YUM. I also went to Whole Foods and picked up 6 bottles of Kombucha. It's the most extravagant grocery item that I buy but it's soooo good and keeps me from snacking. Plus, they were on sale so I had to buy lots. The cranberry is my favorite, but I've also tried grape and guava and they're both good, too.

I saw a model/actress today at Whole Foods about 6 inches away from me (also buying Kombucha). Here's the thing about famous people -- they are definitely skinnier than you realize. All the famous women I've seen so far have been very, very thin. LA just has a different definition of thin. You know the skinny girls you know in the Midwest? Well, they wouldn't be skinny here. It's an interesting thing to get used to. And it's not like we don't have fat people in LA, but I would say there are definitely fewer. Maybe instead of 2/3 of the population being overweight it's 1/3.

Well, I'm off to go water my plants. Grow, babies, grow!

My First Strawberry!

Phewf I have been busy. So let's see. Friday: audition, dinner party at Michelle's with a Native Foods Vegan Wellington as the star. For those who don't know, a vegan Wellington is like a beef Wellington... except it's vegan. This one was stuffed with seitan, mashed potatoes, peas, and kale, and probably some other stuff. It was very good. I brought the cookies I made and they were a hit! Yay! I also met some interesting people and one girl told me about her former part-time job as a model for art classes. I'm seriously thinking about trying it... maybe?

Saturday I went to brunch at Madeleine Bistro with two girls from the Vegan Ladies meetup. The girls were very nice and we had a good time but I have to admit I was slightly underwhelmed by the food and it was definitely not worth the price. I got the tofu benedict, and it just wasn't that substantial. It was $15 for some hash browns with tofu on top, with a little bit of mushrooms in between and asparagus around the plate. And hollandaise sauce on the side. And I don't love potatoes so I only ate about 1/4 of the tatoes but all of the rest of it. It's not that it wasn't good, just that it was super duper overpriced. I'm sure it's all my fault for trying to be healthy, because the other girls got waffles and crepes and were very happy with their choices. I feel like I always order wrong. I usually want what the other person got, and that's just because I suck at ordering.

It looks nice, though, right?

So, after brunch I had another audition and then I went over to my friends' house to hang out before filming started for the web video we were doing. Filming was great, it was a total blast and everyone was nice and fun to hang out with. It was realllly cold outside (like low fifties! Eek!) but at least we were filming around a fire!

I spent the night over there and then hung out with them the whole next day. It was so nice because they have a 2-year-old daughter who was just loving finding Easter eggs all day. My mom made Easter baskets for us all the way up until last year. =) I miss it...

Yesterday I had an audition and then my first Power Group meeting, which is where you meet with a bunch of other actors and discuss what you did for your career in the past month and what you will do next month. A good way to stay accountable! As far as food goes, yesterday I ate several oranges, an apple, a cherimoya, some strawberries, some dried apricots, and two zucchinis worth of zucchini pasta with cherry tomatoes and pesto.

Today I went and worked out at Cardio Barre. I like the Cardio Barre class, but I do have a problem -- I get bored of exercise really fast. I like the first two weeks, and then it's a chore.

I came home and sat up on the deck and had a delicious green smoothie of kale, broccolini, banana, orange, spirulina, and blueberries. I checked out my plants, which are doing great. Which leads me to the title of my post -- I have my first strawberry!

Isn't it beautiful? It looks just like a real strawberry that someone else grew. There are a few more baby ones and I'm going to wait for them to ripen before I eat any of them. Ahh it's so great!

After lunch I talked to my mom on Skype for an hour (yayyy!). I have noticed that I am significantly happier when I get to hang out with my mom (even if it's only virtually).

For afternoon snack I had some dried apricots and an apple. Then I went to go tutor, which was fun. We talked about lax vowels (like the "i" in swim) and the "th" sound. Both are very difficult for English learners because they're very uncommon sounds.

I came home and had a whole bunch of salad for dinner. My salad was composed of chard, mango salsa, Rawmesan, and tahini dressing. YUM! For dessert I had a mashed banana with goji berries. And then... and this is very interesting... I drank tea. Now, I do not like tea. But someone at the dinner party on Friday gave me some Saint John's Wort mix tea and I actually really liked it, so he sent me home with a few packets. I brewed one up and I'm highly enjoying it. Weird, right?!

OH, and today I made my video audition for Glee. So please go view it and give it a gold star, whatever that means.

Some Non-Raw Food... and Cookies.

Yesterday was a day where I just tried to eat up everything left in my fridge, which included some non-raw food for the first time in about a month. For breakfast I ate a few oranges and then for lunch I made some miso soup with Shirataki noodles. I mostly ate the noodles because they had been in my fridge for a while and needed to be eaten. They were tasty, though, and I felt good after eating them. I certainly love raw food but I don't feel like other people do when they say, "Oh whenever I eat anything cooked I feel horrible." I feel pretty much the same as long as whatever I ate was healthy and I didn't eat too much of it. For dinner I had salad and nori rolls, which was a great way to use up my leftover produce. I also made cookies for the dinner party that I'm going to tonight. It was a good way to use up the flour and other ingredients I still had and which I can't really see myself using now that I'm eating predominantly raw. The cookies have whole wheat flour, Earth Balance, sugar, vanilla, cocoa powder, cinnamon, baking soda, chocolate chips, and oat groats (both ground up and whole). I then baked for about 13 minutes at 375. The reason I don't have a recipe is because I really bake by feel, adding ingredients until the texture is right. I really love baking, but it has to follow a two-step process: 1) Bake. 2) GIVE AWAY BAKED GOODS.

So tonight, I'll be going to a dinner party featuring a Native Foods vegan Wellington (a big deal in LA) and bringing these cookies.

The other day Bitt, from a Bitt of Raw, posted about her favorite sweeteners. One that she didn't include but that is a personal favorite of mine is blackstrap molasses. The reason I love molasses so much is because it has a very strong flavor, so you barely have to use any, and it supplies great nutrition like high levels of calcium and iron (I think 1 tablespoon of blackstrap molasses has about 40 calories and 20% RDA for both iron and calcium... there's also some good magnesium in there). The first time I tried molasses, I thought it was disgusting. But the flavor has grown on me -- but not toooo much. So that means I don't get obsessed with it, which is a good thing!

Whoa Zucchini Pasta! And coffee.

So I finally made zucchini pasta and now I get what the big deal is. Last night I had three zucchinis in my house and now I have none -- I need to rectify that soon!

I also had lots of salad last night. This picture only shows one bowl, but I had two or three more bowls after that. It has a baby romaine mix, cherry tomatoes, spicy sprouted lentils, Rawmesan, sauerkraut, and baby artichokes.

Another thing I've been thinking about is coffee. Gena over at Choosing Raw just posted about her decision to keep drinking coffee because she likes it so much. I have given it up for the last several weeks, which did help me realize that I'm not addicted to it. But I have realized one thing I really like about coffee is the time that I take to drink it. I sit down, slow down, and focus on it. I have a problem slowing down sometimes and coffee is a great way for me to do that. Plus, I really don't think it's that bad for you. So I had a cup today and it was great. :)
